Alcohol, Medication and Older Adults
For Those Who Care About or Care for an Older Adult
What Can You Do?
Doctors play a key role in identifying alcohol problems in older adults and recommending treatment. But doctors do not see their patients everyday or observe patients at home to see the whole picture. Family members, friends, and caregivers are an important link between the older adult and the doctor. You may be able to provide missing information when needed.
Alcohol can be a serious problem for older adults. If you are concerned about an older adult in your family or someone you care about, please encourage the person to talk to his or her doctor. Remember:
- Tell the doctor about any alcohol use.
- Tell the doctor about past alcohol use or family members with alcohol problems.
- Ask the doctor if there are "safe limits" of alcohol use.
- Ask the doctor about the interaction of alcohol with prescription medications.
- Make sure the older person does not drink and drive.
- Discourage drinking before bedtime because alcohol can interfere with sleep.
- Be sensitive to stigma and shame when speaking with an older adult about your concern.
