Alcohol's Effect on Bodily Systems and Organs

Sexual Functioning

Too much alcohol can make men impotent and delay orgasm in women. Moderate intake of alcohol can lead to lower levels of testosterone and feminization of the male body (e.g., enlarged breasts and a decrease in body hair). In addition, alcohol use can lower inhibition and increase risk taking. This impaired judgment can lead to unprotected sex and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.

Alcohol inhibits the sexuality of more than the drinker. Women do not desire or enjoy sex when their partners have been drinking.

Finally, the risk of breast cancer has been shown to increase by approximately 50 percent in women who consumed three to nine drinks per week compared to women who drank fewer than three drinks per week.1
