Addressing, Blocking, and Curbing School Aggression
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
The Olweus Prevention Program is a multilevel, multicomponent school-based program designed to reduce or prevent bullying in elementary, middle, and junior high school (students 6 to 15 years old). The main focus of the program is to improve peer relations to make the school a safe and positive place for students to learn. Core program components are implemented at the school, class, and individual levels (Model Programs [SAMHSA], 2003; CSPV, 1999):
- School-wide components include:
- The administration of an anonymous questionnaire to assess the nature and prevalence of bullying at each school
- Training for all staff
- Formation of a bullying prevention coordinating committee
- Increased supervision of students at "hot spots" for bullying
- Development of school-wide rules against bullying
- Consistent consequences for following/not following the rules
- A school-wide kick-off event
- Parental involvement
- Staff discussion groups to ensure understanding and motivation
- Classroom components include:
- Holding regular class meetings with students about bullying
- Consistent reinforcement of school rules against bullying
- Individual components include:
- Interventions with children identified as bullies and victims
- Discussions with parents of involved students
