Module Descriptions

Module 1: Introduction to Elder Abuse

This module identifies the nature, scope, and severity of the problem of elder abuse and reinforces the message that elder abuse is preventable.

Module 2: The Basics of Elder Abuse

The causes of elder abuse are complex and multifaceted. This module examines forms of abuse, presents statistics on abusers and victims, and shows the consequences for the victim, abuser, and society.

Module 3: Substance Use and Other Risk Factors

Substance abuse is a major risk factor associated with elder abuse and neglect. This module demonstrates how substance use and other risk factors may be present in the victim or abuser and the barriers to intervention in substance abuse-related violence among older adults.

Module 4: Screening and Assessment

The goal of screening for elder abuse is to identify who is experiencing abuse, reduce or eliminate the risk of continuing abuse, and protect the individual. Assessment is a broad-based concept to determine appropriate interventions and other measures. This module provides information, tips, and links to tools that can help the professional screen for elder abuse, substance abuse, and other problems.

Module 5: Intervention and Treatment

This module presents a framework for intervention strategies from a multidisciplinary perspective. The module explores the role of Adult Protective Services, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, and other institutions, agencies, and laws relating to elder abuse intervention. Intervention services, from respite care to prosecution, are presented.

Module 6: Preventing Elder Abuse

Professionals, families, and communities can all play a role in preventing elder abuse. This module presents protective factors to help older people build resiliency and avoid abuse and identifies approaches to help families and caregivers maintain healthy relationships. The course outlines the benefits of a multidisciplinary team approach for addressing and preventing elder abuse.
