Given these statistics, it is not enough to expect young people (and adults) to simply turn a deaf ear to the unhealthy messages and influences that bombard them. Communities that apply environmental strategies can create a new, more balanced context for these messages to reinforce healthy behaviors.

Given the high place of mass media and popular culture in modern society, it may seem like an impossible challenge to counterbalance these forces. Yet there is good news: history has proven that it can be done. Just take a look at how far society has come in the effort to reduce tobacco use. Much of this progress has to do with the application of environmental strategies.
