Education

Education can play an important role in dramatically altering prevailing opinions and practices. Government and community leaders are helping to educate the public on everything from substance abuse and suicide prevention to the need for healthy eating and exercise habits.

Experts recommend a comprehensive approach that involves other environmental strategies, such as enforcement and media advocacy. ref

Prevention activities involving education may not always involve changing the environment per se but may be targeted at individual behavior. For the purposes of this course, education is used to refer to those activities that directly affect systems and institutions, such as restaurants and bars, or that decrease the availability of drugs and alcohol.
