Environmental Strategies for Prevention
A Guide To Helping the Prevention Professional Work Effectively in the Community
Public Education
Public education increases knowledge and awareness of a health issue. Prevention professionals at the local, State, or national level may conduct public education campaigns about programs, policies, and laws or on research and new findings related to health areas, such as school violence and substance abuse.
Examples of public education messages include:
- "Friends don't let friends drive drunk"
- "Click It or Ticket"
- "Only you can prevent forest fires"
- "Too smart to start"
SAMHSA has numerous materials to help prevention professionals and communities conduct media outreach and public education. As part of its National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month campaign, SAMHSA provides a kit that includes a Sample Press Release, an op-ed, and a public service announcement (PSA). A printer-friendly version of the kit can be downloaded at http://www.recoverymonth.gov
