A Guide To Helping the Prevention Professional Work Effectively in the Community

Module 2: Types of Environmental Approaches - Page 3 of 26

CSAP Resources

CSAP has numerous resources to help communities and people in prevention work effectively at each of these stages. CSAP's Prevention Technology Platform, PrevTech, features several tools to help prevention professionals conduct assessments and measure community readiness for change.

Effective prevention programs also incorporate the culture of the community they are trying to reach. Culturally Competent Programs are those that draw on community-based values, traditions, and customs and work with people from the community to develop and administer interventions, communications, and other efforts. ref

An important resource for those in the prevention field is CSAP's Centers for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPTs), which are organized into the Northeast, Central, Western, Southeast, and Southwest CAPTs. The five regional CAPTs provide training and other materials to assist States, jurisdictions, and community-based organizations in applying the latest research-based knowledge to their substance abuse prevention programs, practices, and policies.

Regional Web sites (which can be accessed on the map below) offer information about State and Federal resources, training offerings, technical assistance, distance learning, data systems related to drug use, research updates, and other materials and services to enhance efforts and collaboration.

This module will provide resources, Web sites, and examples that can serve as a starting point for communities and individuals to show how environmental strategies can support a plan of action.
