Patterns of Abuse

According to the 2002 Call to Action report by the NIAAA Task Force on College Drinking: ref

• 1,400 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die every year as a result of hazardous drinking.
• 500,000 people suffer unintentional injuries under the influence of alcohol.
• 600,000 people are assaulted by drinking students.
• More than 70,000 people are sexually assaulted.

In addition to an individual's likelihood of addiction based on risk factors, campus norms, and conditions within the larger community affect college student drinking behavior. These factors include the accessibility of alcohol and the failure to penalize inappropriate use. ref These factors create what the NIAAA Task Force report calls a "culture of drinking."
