Outcome Evaluation: What Effect Are We Having?

An outcome evaluation of Cool After School would focus on the results of the program. An outcome evaluation is typically conducted during the course of a grantee's prevention activities. It assesses whether the objectives (for example, reduce substance use, improve school performance) were achieved.

These evaluations try to measure what the program achieved versus what would have occurred without the program. Specific questions could include:

  1. Did program participants reduce use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs compared to nonparticipants?
  2. Did program participants delay the onset of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs use compared to nonparticipants?
  3. Did program participants improve school performance compared to nonparticipants?
  4. Did program participants improve perception of parental attitudes toward youth ATOD use compared to nonparticipants?
  5. Did program participants increase disapproval of drug use compared to nonparticipants?
