Module 3: Variable - Are They Related? - Page 7 of 18

What Is Chi-square?

The chi-square statistic tells us if two nominal-level variables are independent. In plain English, that means it shows whether there is a relationship between the two variables (in our case marijuana and alcohol use and program participation) that could not have been caused by chance alone.

A picture of an atom.

Chi-Square is an exploratory statistic. It is a great way to get a feeling for your data however; there are many more powerful tests.
