Where To Get Protection Orders

States generally assign a specific type of court (district, civil, family) to apply for a protection order. Where an incident of domestic violence has occurred and the victim is at continuing risk of violence by the perpetrator (abuser). Usually, the minor (lower) court has the responsibility to hear and dispose emergency protection orders.6

Some states like Massachusetts specify that the superior, probate, family, district and Boston municipal courts all have jurisdiction to issue protection orders.7
