Behavior Associated with Substance Abuse
It is important to understand that some signs of substance abuse may indicate other health-related problems. Therefore, if you suspect someone has a substance abuse problem, encourage a doctor visit first.
General Signs of Substance Abuse
- Abrupt changes in work or school attendance, quality of work, grades, and reliability
- Unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper
- Withdrawal from responsibility
- General changes in and lack of attention to overall appearance and attitude (e.g., not showering for a few days or wearing dirty clothing)
- Hanging out with known substance abusers
- Unusual borrowing of money from friends, coworkers, or parents
- Secretive behavior regarding actions and possessions and poorly hidden attempts to keep from being found out.4
General Signs of Alcohol Abuse
- Odor on the breath, intoxication (obviously drunk)
- Difficulty focusing, glazed appearance of the eyes
- Unusually passive or aggressive behavior or irritability
- Gradual (or sudden in adolescents) lack of concern for personal appearance or hygiene
- Worsening job performance or school work
- Missing work or school (especially on Monday)
- Unexplained bruises and accidents
- Flushed skin
- Loss of memory (blackouts)
- Getting and drinking alcohol becomes the focus of social or professional activities
- Damage to relationships with friends and close family (e.g., not being as responsible with household chores or driving, breaking dates in order to drink, not being able to have normal discussions when drunk)4
