Date Rape and Dating Violence
Date rape refers to nonconsensual sexual intercourse by a friend or acquaintance. Force is not necessarily involved. If someone is unable to give consent or does not agree to have sexual intercourse, it is considered rape. For example, if a woman is asleep or unconscious, it is rape. Date rape drugs (see Module 6) would affect a woman's ability to agree to sex. So would alcohol.
Dating violence involves a need for power and control. All acts, whether they are physical, emotional, or sexual, are done to show and keep control. Most of the men who get violent in dating relationships hold very traditional "old-fashioned" ideas about the roles of men and women. For example, the man may believe that a woman needs to serve the man.
Beware of the double standard! An example of a double standard is the man feeling that he may go out any time he wants with his friends and does not have to tell his girlfriend where he is going. If the girlfriend, however, does the same thing, she's in trouble. What's o.k. for the man is not o.k. for the woman: That's the double standard.
