Promoting Healthy Relationships

The qualities of relationships that have been highlighted so far have not been healthy. It is easy to recognize the unhealthy qualities in a relationship, but in order to change, you must also know what qualities are healthy. Signs of a healthy relationship include respect, trust, and sensitivity.6

Understanding your basic rights in a relationship can help you get the respect and affection you deserve. It also helps to have an idea of what love is and isn't. Healthy relationships are based on the belief that two people in a relationship are partners with equal rights to have their needs met and equal responsibility for the success of the partnership. Violence is not an option because it violates the rights of one partner and jeopardizes the relationship. The dignity of both partners is strengthened in a relationship that is based on equality, as shown in the Equality Wheel below.
