Although rape and sexual assault do happen to older women, young women ages 16 to 24 run the highest risk of being sexually assaulted.5 Unfortunately, most rapes go unreported because of the shame or disgrace attached to sexual assault. However, according to a study nationwide, roughly a quarter of all women are sexually assaulted by the time they graduate college or reach age 25.4

Sexual assault is more common than people think. It's a serious problem in high schools and on college campuses. One reason is the way our culture defines how girls and boys should act. For example, society still encourages men to be aggressive. Similarly, people expect women to be more passive and to avoid conflict.
