- It isn't easy to handle being raped or sexually assaulted, but certain steps can help. These include going someplace safe and seeing a doctor as soon as possible.
- If someone close to you is raped or sexually assaulted, it is important to believe her. It's also important to be supportive. It is NEVER the victim's fault.
- You may want to seek professional help for your loved one and yourself to help cope with the trauma.
- Survivors of rape and sexual assault may experience lingering effects such as headaches, nightmares, and eating disorders. Some may experience posttraumatic stress disorder. Symptoms include frightening flashbacks, nightmares, and numbing of physical and emotional responses.
