Women With Addictions
Generally, the treatment of alcohol or drug abuse follows similar patterns no matter where in the country a woman goes for help. Many substance abuse treatment centers provide:
- Drug treatment if appropriate (such as antabuse for alcohol addiction or methadone for heroin addiction),
- Counseling that will use role playing and therapy with the client and her family,
- Alternative therapy such as acupuncture, and
- Social learning techniques (which require remaining drug-free and learning what to do to remain sober).4
Not all women who are addicted to alcohol or drugs have the same needs. Some may have had the addiction for many years, while others only recently. The following are some available types of care4 for women:
- Inpatient or residential detoxification
- Residential treatment and rehabilitation
- Outpatient treatment services
- Self-help/support groups
