Alcohol Abuse and Violence Against Women
Module 2: Understanding Alcohol Abuse - Page 10 of 18
Risk Factors for Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol abuse problems occur among people of all ages, income levels, and living conditions. It is impossible to predict with certainty who will become addicted. Risk factors that may lead to addiction or abuse are:
- Substance use by parents or other family members.
- Substance use by peers and the perception that "everyone is doing it."
- Early (preadolescent) use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.
- Being a victim of physical or sexual abuse (as a child or adult).
- Abusive or violent environment at home or in school.
- Economic deprivation.17
Men and women use alcohol for different reasons and may be affected by different risk factors. Men drink to enhance their self-importance and to feel powerful, whereas women drink alcohol to help combat feelings of hopelessness or anger.18
