Women are the victims of more than 2 million violent crimes each year.¹³
Women of every race, nationality, and income level experience intimate partner violence.
If every woman victimized by domestic violence last year were to join hands in a line, that line would extend from New York to Los Angeles and back again.¹⁴
Sixty-five percent of all reported incidents of violence against women were from physical assault and battery.¹⁵
Nearly 30 percent of all female homicide victims are killed by their husbands, ex-husbands, boyfriends, or partners. In contrast, 3 percent of male homicide victims are killed by their wives, ex-wives, or girlfriends.¹⁶
Approximately one in five female high school students reports being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.¹⁷
Women are six times more likely than men to be victims of rape or sexual assault.¹⁸
Women aged 16 to 34 years experienced the highest rates of intimate violence (dating violence), with the most frequent occurrences between the ages of 20 and 24 years.¹⁹
Older women make up from 60 to 76 percent of those subjected to all forms of abuse and neglect.²⁰
In large part because of the victims' sense of shame and fear, only 10 to 20 percent of rapes are reported.
