Alcohol Abuse and Violence Against Women
Who Can Use This Course
This Web-based course is for professionals. It provides social workers, physicians, nurses, counselors, and health educators with detailed information about alcohol abuse and several forms of violence against women that can occur. The course describes these "hidden problems" and identifies risk factors, screening and assessment tools, prevention and intervention strategies, treatment, tools for clients, and legal issues.
For clients who are in crisis and need help immediately, lists of hotlines and coalitions are provided in the resources section for your use. There are also many links within the text to other agencies and research. All of the assessment and diagnostic tools featured can be printed and are also found in Supplements.
What Is Covered in This Course
This tutorial covers situations in which women are the intended victims of violence.
It is designed to help women and to provide information to prevent future abuse. (See the Resources section and other sections of the course for information on prevention and on helping men who are abusers.) Women across the life span can be victims of abuse. This material will focus on women from adolescence and older. The course examines rape, sexual assault, dating violence, and domestic violence.
For all types of abuse, the tutorial highlights the ways in which alcohol is related to the violence, from the perspective of the victim as well as the abuser. This issue is highlighted through screening/assessment, treatment, and prevention. The tools provided in this tutorial are ones that are free to the public or whose authors have given copyright permission. Resources include a comprehensive listing of hotlines, Web sites, coalitions, and publications that provide additional relevant information. The listing of these resources and commercially available products or Web sites does not reflect endorsement by CSAP and is included for informational purposes only.
