Prevention Strategies That Value Cultural Diversity
An effective prevention program must address the following:
- Who is the target audience? What are their cultural, ethnic, and generational requirements?
- What are the program goals?
- What will participants know and be able to do? How well will they be able to know/perform? How much time will they need to gain this knowledge before they are ready to apply it? What are the signs that indicate participants are ready to advance?
- How will individuals from different cultural, ethnic, and generational backgrounds respond to a prevention effort? Is the prevention strategy appropriately matched with the needs of this particular population?
Programs that value cultural and generational diversity:
- Emphasize involvement and participation of diverse cultures and generations
- Recognize, value, respect, and build on diversity
- Are committed to intensive outreach
- Recognize the need within racial, ethnic, and generational groups for legitimacy, acceptance, and credibility
- Commit to learning about other groups and communities
- Acquire skills in culturally appropriate communication, etiquette, and problem solving
- Include themes of cooperation and coordination
