• The provider is direct but kind in presenting hard truths of alcoholism.
• The provider stirs the client emotionally.
• The provider educates the client on alcoholism and its treatment.
• The provider gives advice consistent with the client's basic beliefs and values.
• The client participates in making plans.
• The transaction is conducted so that the client can return, whether drinking or not.
