Alcohol and Other Drug Screening Questions

The following are examples of questions that batterers' programs may choose to include in their screening, depending on the clinician's experience, the type of batterers in the program, or characteristics of the man presenting for evaluation. Questions in bold type have been identified by men recovering from drug or alcohol problems as questions that are particularly important.

  1. Has a physician ever suggested that you quit or cut down on your drinking?
  2. Has anyone in your family or close to you ever expressed concern about your drinking or drug use?
  3. Have you ever missed school events for your children?
  4. Has any member of your family ever had a problem with drugs or alcohol?
  5. Has anyone ever told you that when you drink or use drugs you are a different person?
  6. Have you ever been unable to remember parts of the night before when you were drinking?
  7. Have you ever done things to get alcohol or drugs that made you feel ashamed?
  8. Have you tried to quit or cut down on alcohol on your own?
  9. Have you been using more drugs or alcohol than normal?
  10. Have you ever thought about getting help or going into treatment?
  11. Have you ever gone to counseling or self help (AA, NA) to help with drinking?
  12. Has your use of alcohol or drugs ever gotten you into trouble?
  13. Have you ever gotten into a fight while using?
  14. Are you a normal drinker?
  15. What is the most you have ever drank or used in a 24-hour period?
  16. Do drugs or alcohol make you feel better?
  17. Do you ever wish that you didn't use alcohol or drugs?
  18. How long have you been using drugs?
  19. How old were you when you got high or intoxicated on drugs or alcohol for the first time?
  20. Have you ever had a DUI?
  21. Do you like to drink before a party to relax or get ready?
  22. Do you look forward to certain times of the day because you know you can drink or use drugs?
